What to ask before you book bridal makeup

A bridal booking is not really a booking for one morning. It is a booking for a trial, a conversation about light, a decision about how long the day runs, and only then the morning itself. Brides who enjoy the morning are almost always the ones who settled the rest in advance.

Book the trial as its own appointment

A trial is chargeable, and it should be. It takes as long as the real thing and it is the only opportunity to see the look in daylight, photograph it on your own phone, sleep on it and change your mind. A look approved in a mirror at nine in the evening is not the same as a look you have seen in your own photographs.

Bring the jewellery to the trial, or a clear photograph of it. Heavy gold changes what the face needs; so does a maang tikka sitting where a highlight would otherwise go.

Say what the light will be

The single most useful thing you can tell a makeup artist is where you will be standing and what will be lighting you. A morning mandap in daylight and an evening reception under flash want two different bases. HD and airbrush finishes photograph differently under a flash than they look to the eye — which is the point, but only if the artist knows which one you are dressing for.

• What time does each function start, and is it indoors or out?
• Is there a professional photographer using flash, or mostly phones?
• How many hours from the first application until the last photograph?

Ask about the rest of the family

Bridal makeup is rarely one face. If your mother, sisters and cousins also need to be ready, that has to be in the booking from the start — it changes how many artists are needed and what time everyone starts. It is the most common reason a wedding morning runs late.

Outstation bookings are quoted differently and travel is separate. Ask early, because the answer affects your whole timeline: an artist travelling to the venue needs to arrive the night before, not the morning of.
